The next morning Ronnie returned to Illinois and everything returned to normal. He continued to call and email Becky. He expressed his love for her; he even insinuated marriage. And yet—he didn’t invite her to visit him. He rarely called at night. He failed to call her most weekends. He never answered his cell phone, her calls went to his voicemail and he didn’t have a home phone.

Becky suggested that she wanted to come see him in Peoria. Ronnie said his house was a mess, and he had custody of his 12-year-old son on weekends. He said he didn’t need a home phone, and he didn’t call her at night, because he traveled all the time. He said he didn’t answer his cell phone because it was a company phone with limited personal talk time.
